After a therapeutic massage, it is common that the client may be sore for 1-2 days after the massage since pressure has been applied to their muscles that they usually don’t focus on during any type of work or exercise.

After your deep tissue massage it is a good idea to consume water as your body will feel dehydrated.  There will be a lot of metabolic waste and toxins released during your massage and drinking water allows your kidneys to do its work and flush away the toxins.

Swedish Massage vs Therapeutic Massage

A Swedish massage is more geared towards relaxation and the focus is on feeling good and relaxed at the end of the massage.  This type of massage focuses on slower strokes with a lighter pressure.  This light pressure helps increase the circulation and blood flow.

Swedish Massages focus on:

  • Lighter pressure
  • Different techniques (kneading and longer strokes)
  • Focus on the entire body
  • Used more for relaxation

Swedish massages are more common and looks to help with muscle relaxation and reduces any tension in the muscles.

Swedish massages are great for:

  • Lower Back
  • Shoulders
  • Neck

A therapeutic massage is great for those with injuries, athletes, and people with chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.  Like a Swedish massage it will use the same stroking and kneading movements but with increased pressure.  A massage therapist may increase pressure as they go deeper into the muscle, using forearms, fingers, fists, and even their elbow.  This type of massage can help with blood flow and help reduce any inflammation in the area.
